This photograph, taken in Ludwigsburg in May 1916, portrays Arthur Moos mounted on horseback in the uniform of the 20th Uhlan Regiment. The horse and rider, a motif as old as time, resonates with power and nobility. We see echoes of equestrian statues of Roman emperors, where the horse symbolizes control and dominance. Yet, here, the context is transformed. The Uhlan uniform evokes the great sweep of European military history, from the steppe horsemen to the modern battlefield, and the photograph's starkness strips away the romanticism. The steed, historically a symbol of virility and freedom, is now bound to the constraints of war. The photograph, simple in its composition, conveys an unsettling blend of pride and foreboding, touching on deep-seated collective memories of conflict and its psychological toll.
