Wyoming c. 1964 - 1979

Garry Winogrand captured this photograph "Wyoming" using a camera and photographic paper. Winogrand was known for his street photography, catching spontaneous moments in public places, and here he is capturing it from inside of a car. What's interesting is the way Winogrand uses the car's windshield as a compositional element; blurring the distinction between the interior and exterior, the public and private. The glass isn't clean, we can see the streaks and smudges, reminding us of the material reality of the photograph. Winogrand gives us the feeling of labor as the landscape has been forged through natural forces, as well as modern technology, and it acts as an important reminder of how we experience and interact with the world around us.
