Gil Nicolescu made Peisaj Contemporan I with oils, exploring warm tones and clear geometry. The composition is cleaved in two, with the left side rendered in blended and gestural brushstrokes and the right in crisp, vertical lines of color. It's like a sunset seen through a very ordered window. What strikes me is the tension between the controlled and the chaotic. On the left, the paint is layered, thick in places, and almost sculptural, it looks like a storm. Then, there are those dark brown birds rising from the dark earth. On the right, each stroke is smooth, flat, and even. The color moves from pale yellow to deep orange, creating a sense of rhythm and progression. This reminds me of Agnes Martin who also played with the grid, but Nicolescu adds this wild and expressive element, reminding us that art is always a conversation, a dialogue between different ideas and approaches. Nicolescu shows us that painting can be both, a space for order and a space for freedom.
