Dimensions Diameter: 9 1/4 in. (23.5 cm)

This soup plate was crafted by the Meissen Manufactory. Its circular form, about nine and a quarter inches in diameter, is immediately striking, bordered by a delicate, scalloped edge. The pristine white porcelain serves as a canvas for the cobalt blue decoration. This creates a visually appealing contrast. The central motif features a cherubic figure rendered in fluid lines. The figure interacts playfully with a fishing rod. Around the rim, garlands of flowers and ribbons create a rhythmic pattern that draws the eye. The composition is structured to enhance the plate's functionality. The central image is contained so as not to interfere with the plate's use. The surrounding garland acts as a frame, drawing attention to the food it would have contained, whilst also displaying the affluence of the owner. The plate shows an interplay between utility and luxury. It embodies a semiotic exchange between form and function that speaks to the cultural values of its time.
