John Swientochowski made this drawing of a Serving Table, we don't know when, using an unknown medium. It's an image of furniture, but somehow it's not really about the object, more about how light and shadow describe the curves and edges. The color is mostly restrained, limited to wood tones, but it's the delicate shifts and gradients that hold your attention. The legs are really beautiful – look how they flare out like some sort of organic growth, or maybe they're like the arms of a dancer caught mid-pose. The surface is smooth, almost like a photograph, but it has a subtle texture that hints at the hand of the artist, the sensitivity of the artist. There’s something about its quietness that reminds me of Giorgio Morandi's still lifes. Ultimately, art is an ongoing conversation, and there is always more to discover than what is immediately apparent.
