This etching by Dutch artist Pieter Tanjé (1706-1761) titled "Petrus vindt een munt in de bek van een vis / Christus zegent de kinderen" (Peter Finds a Coin in the Mouth of a Fish / Christ Blesses the Children) depicts two biblical scenes from the Gospels of Matthew. The upper scene illustrates the story of Peter catching a fish with a coin in its mouth (Matthew 17:24-27), while the lower scene depicts Jesus blessing children (Matthew 19:13-15). Tanjé expertly utilizes line and detail to communicate the drama and tenderness of these familiar Christian narratives. This etching, now in the collection of the Rijksmuseum, is a fine example of Tanjé’s skill as an engraver and illustrator.
