Bela Czobel made this nude in 1930, and he really went for it with the paint. It's thick and juicy, all these short strokes building up the figure and the background in layers. There's a looseness here that feels really immediate. Look how the blues and greens in the backdrop bleed into the figure, and how the red of the background glows through the skin. It's not about precision but about the feeling of light and shadow, the sheer physicality of the body. Those dark, empty eyes are really intense. I think of someone like Kirchner, who was also painting the figure with this kind of raw, emotional directness. It's like they're both wrestling with the paint, trying to capture something essential about being alive. The whole thing feels unresolved. Which, to me, is the point.
