D. Viel drew "Huib, Zus en Moes kijken naar een boeket met hulst" using pen and ink; it's all about lines, right? The hatching, the stippling, the little curlicues in the mother's dress – it's almost dizzying but also strangely comforting. I love how the artist doesn't try to hide the process. You can see every stroke, every decision. It's like a conversation between the artist and the paper. Look at the way the light hits the children's hair, just a few flicks of the pen, but it brings them to life. And that vase of flowers, it's got this quirky, almost human quality. It reminds me a bit of some of Redon's charcoal drawings, that same dreamlike atmosphere. But Viel's got a touch of humor, too, a wink that says, "Hey, we're all just making it up as we go along." Art, for me, is about embracing that ambiguity, that playfulness.
