This is ‘Memorial Panel for Lubbert Bolle’ by Jan Gerritsz van Bronckhorst, a painting on wood. Notice how the composition is structured around vertical lines, establishing a sense of order and hierarchy. The artist divides the pictorial space into distinct zones, separating the earthly from the divine. On the left, the earthly realm is represented by the kneeling figure of Bolle, his gaze directed upwards. Whereas, on the right, the Virgin Mary sits enthroned, holding the Christ Child. Bronckhorst uses the figures' positioning to signify their roles and status within the religious context. The figures are rendered with a stark realism. The inscription at the bottom anchors the painting in its purpose as a memorial. The artist invites us to reflect on themes of mortality, spirituality and representation within the confines of this work. It prompts us to question the ways in which art mediates memory and meaning.
