Editor: This is an X-radiograph of "Woman," by Ferdinand Bol. The ghostly image is so interesting and different from what we usually see. What can you tell us about it? Curator: This image draws attention to the layers of material and labor involved in artmaking. The X-ray reveals the artist's process, the unseen underlayers, the support structure. How does this impact our understanding of artistic intention? Editor: That's a great question. I hadn't thought about the hidden layers before. Curator: It challenges the idea of the artist as sole creator and brings focus to the physical aspects and history embedded within the artwork. What do you make of that? Editor: It definitely gives me a different appreciation for the painting. Thanks! Curator: Indeed! This makes the materiality as important as the subject itself.
