This photograph, made at an unknown date by an anonymous photographer, depicts Edith Jetten on horseback. There is a complicated history of cultural exchange bound up with the horse. Horses signified wealth and class in Europe and were later appropriated by wealthy Americans. It’s easy to imagine a scenario where horses are imported along with other trappings of colonial life, such as European architectural styles visible in the houses in the background. What we might overlook is the political role of art in reinforcing social status. Photography was still a relatively new medium at this time, and a photograph like this would solidify Edith’s status within her community. Further research into the Jetten family's social status could reveal more details about the photograph's significance. Only then can we fully understand the image's role within its original socio-economic context.
