Eustache Le Sueur created this drawing, “Holy Family,” using pen and brown wash on paper during the 17th century in France. The image depicts a serene scene: Mary cradles the infant Jesus, while Joseph, draped in robes, reads from a book. Le Sueur, as a male artist, approaches the figures of Mary and Jesus with a blend of reverence and idealized form, typical of religious art at the time. Yet, the drawing departs from traditional depictions of women as passive. Mary is both mother and Madonna, embodying strength in her nurturing pose.
