Eustache Le Sueur created this drawing, “Holy Family,” using pen and brown wash on paper during the 17th century in France. The image depicts a serene scene: Mary cradles the infant Jesus, while Joseph, draped in robes, reads from a book. Le Sueur, as a male artist, approaches the figures of Mary and Jesus with a blend of reverence and idealized form, typical of religious art at the time. Yet, the drawing departs from traditional depictions of women as passive. Mary is both mother and Madonna, embodying strength in her nurturing pose. In contrast, the submissive nature of the child Jesus hints at his future destiny, which in turn creates a dynamic between mother and child. This is a moment suspended, an intersection of daily life and divine purpose. It invites us to reflect on the human experiences of faith, family, and sacrifice, and to find our own place within this timeless narrative.
