This photograph, *Portret van Edouart Maréchal,* was taken by Nadar, whose work provided an important record of the cultural and political figures of his time. Nadar's portraits invite us to consider the relationship between identity, representation, and social status. Edouart Maréchal is portrayed in his military attire, complete with medals, the photograph subtly reinforces notions of masculinity, power, and national pride that were prominent in 19th-century European society. Nadar’s project was to bring out the sitter’s essential self, writing: “I seek to get hold of the personality. I don’t give a damn about likeness…the model is there, struck by a light that I control.” This image offers a glimpse into the values and ideals of a bygone era, but it also prompts us to reflect on the ways in which these values continue to shape our perceptions of identity and status today. The photograph allows us to meditate on the passage of time and the enduring power of images to evoke memory and emotion.
