This rural scene, created in the late 17th or early 18th century by Leonardus Quesi, is rich in pastoral symbolism. Note the bounteous, fecund landscape, with its grazing animals and cultivated fields. These elements speak of harmony and abundance, reflecting a longing for a simpler, more natural existence. The figures present echo motifs that span epochs. Observe the mother and children beneath the trees, reminiscent of the Madonna and Child, or even classical depictions of Venus and Cupid. The act of nurturing and the idealized family unit are universal themes. This yearning for harmony is further amplified by the image of a shepherd tending to his flock, a symbol found as far back as ancient Greece. The shepherd has since morphed into a symbol of religious leaders caring for their congregations. The human psyche, however, is fickle, and in our memories, such images can acquire new, sometimes darker meanings. The collective subconscious retains these symbols, transforming them through time and experience.
