This drawing showing a church window and columns was made by Pierre Cuypers, the famous Dutch architect. Cuypers was instrumental in the late 19th-century Gothic Revival movement in the Netherlands, when the country was rediscovering its medieval past. Cuypers’s designs are instantly recognizable for their use of pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and stained glass windows. These details are all visual references to the architecture of the Middle Ages, which was seen to be infused with religious meaning and national identity. In the Netherlands, Cuypers designed over 100 churches and numerous public buildings including the Rijksmuseum and Central Station in Amsterdam. His work reflects the strong influence of the Catholic Church, which was experiencing a resurgence in the Netherlands at the time. Art historians can draw on many resources to better understand Cuypers’ architectural designs. These include archival documents, architectural models, and historical studies. The meaning of Cuypers's work is contingent on the social and institutional context in which he was working.
