This ewer was made in France by François Joubert, probably in the mid-18th century, from a sheet of silver. The techniques of hammering, chasing and engraving have transformed it into a vessel of refined elegance. While silver is a precious material, the true value here lies in the silversmith’s skill. Notice how the body of the ewer swells and tapers, how the handle elegantly curls, and the precisely detailed ornamentation. These effects weren’t achieved easily; they are the result of years of training and practice. Objects like this reflected the social and economic disparities of the time. While the elite enjoyed such luxuries, the labor of those who mined and processed the silver, and the artisans who shaped it, often went unacknowledged. Considering the many hands involved in its making, this ewer speaks volumes about the complex relationships between labor, materials, and consumption in 18th-century society.
