This silver gelatin print called “The Cable Bridge in its Entirety,” was made by an anonymous artist. I wonder what it was like to be the person holding the camera? There’s something unsettling about this image. Is it the rough construction of the scene, or the slightly ominous sky? The high contrast and detailed focus gives everything a harshness, like there’s something lurking under the surface. I can almost feel the weight of that beam being hoisted up to the top of the crane. In fact, the whole scene has a heavy quality to it. Maybe that’s why the image is so affecting? It reminds me of those Walker Evans photographs, except instead of the Depression era, this scene is located in a jungle, and we have no context. It's these kinds of historical images that allow us to look at the past and reimagine things as they might have been. Each artist is in a constant dialogue with the past and the present. We are forever inspiring one another to see the world differently.
