This 1778 print by Nicolas Dupin, now in the Rijksmuseum, presents us with an ‘acteur bourgeois’ engrossed in study during his promenade. The most striking motif here is the gesture of the man’s hands clasped to his mouth. It is a gesture of contemplation, of inward focus, but also one of concealing, of keeping secrets. We see echoes of this pose in countless images across time. Think of Rodin’s ‘Thinker’, poised on the precipice of thought, or even the silent film actors exaggerating emotion through posture. Such gestures resonate with a shared understanding of the human psyche. They tap into our collective memory, stirring subconscious recognition. The posture is one of vulnerability, creating a powerful, if subtle, emotional connection with the viewer. This posture is not static but evolves, carrying echoes of the past into new contexts. It serves as a reminder of how deeply ingrained these visual cues are in our shared, cultural language.
