Teruyo Shinohara made this Bingata Panel with Tree Peonies; it's vibrant, full of life, and almost looks like it was printed, but with a slightly human touch, like it was done by hand. I love the colors in this piece; they're so lively and joyful, and it's clear that Shinohara understood how to use color to create a sense of depth and texture. The surface has this incredible texture, too, where you can almost feel the brushstrokes and the way the dye was applied. If you look closely at the petals, you see how each one is slightly different, with its own unique shape and character. This makes me think about how a painter builds up an image, one mark at a time, and how each mark contributes to the whole. I think Shinohara reminds me of Matisse, in the way that both artists use color and pattern to create a sense of energy and movement in their work, yet still embrace the beauty of imperfection. Art should be a conversation, and I think Shinohara’s work contributes to that dialogue in a meaningful way.
