Stanley Artgerm Lau created "Wonder in the Snow", sometime in the 20th century. Here we have an image that situates Wonder Woman in a traditionally masculine space. The snow reminds me of the battlefields men fight on, but our heroine seems unperturbed by the cold and the fight ahead. In many ways, the artist maintains the traditions of Wonder Woman, particularly her strength, resolve and beauty. But Artgerm also seems to develop an alternative narrative for the superhero. The cape, for example, gives her a regal quality, suggesting that she is not just a fighter, but also a leader and protector of her people. This, along with the fact that she is a woman, challenges typical notions of power and leadership. Ultimately, "Wonder in the Snow" is a powerful work that makes a strong, affective statement about gender and leadership. The artwork invites us to reconsider how we portray powerful women in popular culture.
