Editor: Lech Jankowski’s "Schwarzes Zimmer, Wandlüftung," created in 2017 using mixed media, evokes a sort of hushed, internal space. I’m really drawn to how the lines suggest movement in such a still image. What visual symbols stand out to you here? Curator: That sense of stillness you identify is powerful. The 'black room,' alluded to in the title, immediately connects to archetypal symbols of the subconscious. Those faint lines, like barely visible threads, remind me of psychological concepts of connection—threads of memory perhaps? Do you see any element in the work which you recognize? Editor: The fan-like shape definitely catches my eye; I initially see a suggestion of a seashell, and now, in response to you, perhaps a folding screen, or a room divider. The way the lines converge seems deliberate. Curator: Indeed. The converging lines draw the eye inward, don't they? Consider how the artist uses this shape – the fan or screen which has served different social rituals - to perhaps reflect the subjective and psychological "airs" within a contained, interior world. Editor: So, it's less about physical air and more about inner dialogue? Curator: Perhaps. What I find fascinating is the subtle interplay of light and shadow within the 'black room'—the faint illumination and texture which both reveal and conceal. How does the colour impact the overall mood? Editor: It feels melancholic but also grounded, perhaps even a little hopeful despite the darkness. Curator: Precisely. Colour affects memory as much as form does. It could indicate an individual struggle but speaks on how those struggles create forms we can identify, irrespective of personal history. It offers a fascinating commentary on internal and external influences on visual culture and experience. Editor: This makes me appreciate the artist's ability to translate such abstract ideas into something tangible. Curator: I agree. The symbolic weight in Lech Jankowski's work offers a new understanding of the convergence between psychological experience and form, reminding us how inner worlds shape our perceptions and symbols.
