Editor: This is Lech Jankowski’s “Mandelwind” from 2022, crafted using mixed media including acrylic paint. I’m immediately struck by the rough texture and geometric shapes; it’s almost architectural. How should we approach an understanding of this work? Curator: Let's start with the surface. Notice the varied textures achieved with mixed media. What does this suggest about Jankowski's engagement with the tradition of painting? Is he trying to break down hierarchies between different art materials or processes, or create some commentary on that? Editor: It definitely feels like there’s a conversation happening between high and low art, almost like it could be from common craft, using accessible materials. Curator: Precisely. Consider the social context too: What artistic or political dialogues might Jankowski be engaging with, through his focus on materials and process? It’s interesting that the "Mandel" in the title might connect to mandalas and mathematical structures, yet presented so crudely through these specific media and applied with distinct artistic labor. Editor: So, the value isn’t just in the final image, but also in how it was made and what materials were employed in order to generate dialogue, and challenge traditional modes of art production, consumption and value. Curator: Absolutely! Thinking about consumption brings another level to this consideration of value. The choice of accessible and mass-produced materials in an artistic context also encourages questions of access to art creation. Who makes art, what do they make art with, and for whom? These geometric forms feel universal, and yet… Editor: ...presented in a very particular way, almost highlighting the labour behind the image! This has definitely changed my view of the artwork. Curator: Mine too! It’s remarkable how focusing on materiality and production opens up new interpretative avenues.
