Imao Keinen created this print of two geese amongst reeds using woodblock printing. Immediately, one’s attention is drawn to the stark contrast between the pale background and the concentrated thicket of reeds in the foreground. Keinen masterfully employs the visual language of line and form to evoke a sense of depth and texture. The delicate, almost ethereal lines of the background reeds contrast sharply with the bold, angular strokes of the foreground. Note how the artist uses colour sparingly, yet effectively. The subtle gradations of grey and brown in the geese feathers create a tactile quality, while the pops of red around the goose's mouth draw our eye. The composition challenges conventional perspective, flattening the pictorial space. This flatness encourages us to consider the artwork not merely as a representation of nature, but as an exploration of form and surface. It invites us to contemplate the interplay between representation and abstraction.
