Rose Freymuth-Frazier made this painting, Sacred Space, with oils probably over a fair amount of time. Looking at it I can almost feel her making those early marks and how she might have shifted things around, maybe wiping some bits away, starting over, again and again. I sympathize with the artist, I know what it's like. I wonder if she was thinking about places that feel both safe, but also maybe a bit spooky at the same time. It's not quite night, not quite day, this in-between time where you could feel so close to the pulse of things. The paint isn’t too thick, but it’s layered, worked, built up into this dreamy atmosphere. See those trees in the middle ground and how the light hits them? It’s almost like they’re glowing from within. I see hints of Hopper, maybe, and even Rothko’s color fields. It is a place that’s deeply personal, but also universal. Ultimately, paintings are always in conversation, echoing and inspiring each other through time. There's an openness here, an invitation to bring your own experiences and feelings to the space, to find your own meaning.
