Stefano della Bella created this tiny etching of Juno as part of his 'Game of Mythology' around the mid-17th century. During this time, European art often depicted mythological figures to explore themes of power, beauty, and human nature. Here, Juno, queen of the gods, is not presented as an untouchable goddess. Instead, she is in a moment of repose. Her posture and gaze, directed away from us, add to the air of contemplation. Alongside her is the peacock, her symbolic animal, regal but silent. The etching technique, with its fine lines, gives the scene a delicate, almost dreamlike quality. It invites us to consider Juno beyond her divine role, perhaps reflecting on the burdens and isolation that come with power. The artwork provides a glimpse into the complexities of representing powerful female figures in art, inviting a reflection on their inner lives.
