Niels Larsen Stevns sketched these studies of crows, “Studier af krager”, sometime during his lifetime, using pencil on paper. Stevns, who lived through both World Wars, was deeply affected by the immense shifts in European society. Here, Stevns uses simple lines to capture the stark essence of the crows, their forms both familiar and alien. Crows have often been seen as omens, symbols of transformation, transition, and even death. His choice to portray these creatures might reflect on the unsettling realities of his time. The use of crows invites reflection on the concept of identity, transformation and resilience. In viewing this sketch, consider how Stevns prompts us to find beauty and meaning, even in the face of life's more challenging aspects.
