Sven Jonson made this painting, “I väntan på vind,” layering semi-transparent glazes of colour to create a dreamy image of boats at sea. It’s interesting how the textures in this piece seem to be built from these superimposed screens of tone. The paint isn't thick; it's more like a stain, creating a visual vibration and depth. Look closely at the shapes of the boat sails, the way they stack and overlap, forming rhythmic patterns that cascade across the canvas. The water is beautifully rendered, with horizontal strokes that mimic the gentle movement of the waves. There's a palpable sense of stillness, as if the entire scene is holding its breath, waiting. The flat shapes and interlocking forms remind me a little of the early work of Stuart Davis, but there's also something uniquely Scandinavian about Jonson's sensibility. Like all great paintings, it invites contemplation and resists easy interpretation.
