Arie Willem Segboer created this print, titled "Uit den vreemde / (2)", which translates to "From Abroad," as part of a series of Dutch children's prints. Segboer’s work reflects the period's fascination with and representation of foreign cultures through the lens of Dutch colonialism and trade. Here we see different individuals identified by their nationality and occupation; a Spanish farmer, a Javanese basket seller, a Mexican woman, a camel driver, a Chinese fruit seller, and a Persian nobleman. The illustrations offer a glimpse into the diverse roles people played in their respective societies but are also indicative of the period’s exoticizing gaze. Notice how each figure is presented in what was considered typical attire and engaged in activities that defined their cultural identity for a European audience. The print invites us to consider how identities are constructed and perceived across cultural boundaries, particularly in contexts shaped by power dynamics. It makes me think about how we look, and who is looking back.
