This commemorative silver medal, "Aanvang van het jaar 1749 en vrede te Aken", was created by Martin Holtzhey in 1748-49 to celebrate the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle, which officially ended the War of the Austrian Succession. The medal, only 3 cm in diameter, depicts the allegorical figure of Pax (Peace) holding a branch of olive, a symbol of peace, and scales, symbolizing justice. The Latin inscription on the reverse translates to "May peace be restored under a good star in the year of liberty, by the grace of God" and commemorates the restoration of peace, especially for the Dutch.
