William Giller created this print, ‘The Faithful Friend, Portrait of Mrs Maguire, with her Son John James’, using the technique of mezzotint. Mezzotint involves roughening the entire surface of a copper plate with a tool called a rocker, then smoothing areas to create lighter tones. The process is labor-intensive. It requires patience and skill to achieve the subtle gradations of light and shadow we see here. Notably, mezzotint was often used for reproducing paintings, making art more accessible to a wider audience through printed images. In this way, Giller’s print embodies a tension between the unique artistic gesture and the mechanics of reproduction. While Giller undoubtedly brought his own artistic sensibility to bear, the process itself was fundamentally reproductive, designed to disseminate images rather than create unique works. This speaks to broader issues of labor and consumption in the art world, particularly the role of printmaking in democratizing access to art. By focusing on the material processes and social context of its creation, we gain a deeper understanding of this compelling artwork.

This little print reproduces a painting with a diameter of 160 centimetres. It was exhibited in 1806 under the neutral title A Fancy Picture. However, it was soon recognized as a portrait of the mistress of the marquis of Abercorn, with their little boy. The title of the print The Faithful Friend refers to their huge newfoundland in the foreground.
