Martiros Sarian painted this landscape with oil on canvas, layering blues, oranges and reds to create a vibrant composition. I can just imagine him standing in front of the canvas, brush in hand, mixing and applying colors with passion. There’s something about the texture and color relationships that makes you feel like you're there, experiencing the light and atmosphere of Yerevan. The thick application of paint gives depth to the pomegranates and apricots in the foreground and the distant mountains, capturing their weight and substance. Look at the way he uses a single stroke to define the fruit's round shape! I can almost taste the sweetness and feel the warmth of the sun. Sarian's ability to evoke emotion through color and form reminds me of Matisse, though Sarian has his own unique voice. Artists are always in dialogue with one another, inspiring and pushing the boundaries of what painting can be. It’s not about fixed meanings, but about the ongoing, embodied expression.
