Charles Dauvois made this stereoscopic photograph of the Palais des Tuileries in Paris in 1871, using photography. This image captures the aftermath of the fire during the Paris Commune, a pivotal moment of intense social and political upheaval. The Paris Commune emerged from the Franco-Prussian War and represented a radical, socialist challenge to the established order. The destruction of the Tuileries Palace, once a symbol of royal and imperial power, embodies a rejection of the past. Dauvois’ photograph does more than document ruins. In viewing the Palais des Tuileries, we witness the fall of symbols of authority, and we're reminded of the power of collective action and the struggle for social change. What kind of future might rise from these ashes?
