Raoul Dufy painted this ‘Landscape with red and yellow’ with oil on canvas, but we don’t know exactly when. Dufy's color palette here is so warm, even though the scene is almost entirely devoid of people. Look at the way he slaps down the paint, especially in the foreground; it’s as if he wants us to feel the very texture of the earth. It’s not just a picture of a place, but a physical encounter with it. Then, there's that little cluster of buildings nestled in the back - they look like they're almost huddling together for warmth. It reminds me a bit of how Derain might’ve handled a similar scene, though Dufy has his own way of loosening the form. It's a reminder that art is an ongoing conversation, each artist riffing off those who came before, and figuring out ways of representing the world with their own distinct and individual view.
