"Marcus de evangelist" is an engraving by François van den Hoeye, a Dutch artist active in the early 17th century. This print depicts Saint Mark, the patron saint of Venice, writing his gospel while a lion, his traditional attribute, peers over his shoulder. Van den Hoeye’s meticulous technique creates a sense of realism in both the human figure and the lion, making this a striking example of 17th-century Dutch printmaking. This artwork is currently located in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
