Kawanabe Kyōsai created these ink on paper sketches called Preliminary Drawings of Demons in Japan during the 19th century. Born during the final years of the Edo period, Kyōsai witnessed Japan's transformation into a modern state. These sketches offer a glimpse into the artist's engagement with traditional folklore and social commentary. Kyōsai lived through a time of immense social and political upheaval, with the collapse of the feudal system and the opening of Japan to the West. The demons and monsters of Japanese folklore can be seen as metaphors for the social and political changes occurring during the period. Kyōsai's demons, with their grotesque features and chaotic energy, can be viewed as symbols of resistance against the new order. "I don't want any rules, I want to be free," Kyōsai once said, and these preliminary sketches embody his desire to break free from artistic and social constraints. These drawings are a testament to Kyōsai's creative spirit and social consciousness, offering a window into the complex cultural landscape of 19th-century Japan.
