Lambertus Lingeman made this study sheet with graphite on paper. Looking at the graphic quality of the marks, there are lots of lines, and cross-hatching. There are some figures that are more clearly articulated than others, like the dog in the upper middle area of the page. As a study sheet, we see Lingeman playing with line weights, and tonal variation through building up the graphite. We might think about this study sheet as a place for him to record and explore his thoughts and observations. It’s a place for him to try out different techniques and approaches, which is something that is often thought of as separate from finished art but is actually a really important part of the creative process. By looking closely at the materials and methods used to create this work, we can appreciate the artist’s skill and gain a deeper understanding of the artistry involved in its production.
