This is Florence Truelson’s ‘Patchwork Quilt – Section’, made with some kind of graphic media on paper. I'm immediately drawn to its handmade quality and its focus on the process. It’s like a page torn from a sketchbook, a fragment of a larger idea. The surface is quite flat, but the stitching around the edge creates a tactile quality. I really enjoy how the texture is achieved through simple marks, and the way the colours are gently blended. The repeated diamond pattern on the lower edge feels meditative. There's a particular area near the top with gold where the thread frays, this small imperfection gives the piece an intimate, personal feel. Truelson’s work reminds me a little of some of Ree Morton's early explorations with craft materials. It highlights the beauty that can be found in the everyday, and how much meaning can be found in the process of making. It’s a reminder that art is about exploration, not perfection.
