This photograph, "Aubade op de Dam in Amsterdam, 5 maart 1901, feestelijkheden ter gelegenheid van het huwelijk van koningin Wilhelmina en prins Hendrik," was taken by Barend Groote. It captures a moment in time, a celebration, but what grabs me is the way Groote plays with light and shadow. The dark velvet drapery hanging from the balcony, heavy with implied texture, contrasts with the sharp architectural details behind. It's a study in contrasts, this picture, the softness against the hard edges, like a dance. It makes me think about how an artist can create a mood, a feeling, with just a few shades. That little glimpse of the royal couple on the balcony, framed by the dark curtains, it’s almost like they're on a stage. It's as if Groote is showing us that art isn't just about what you see, but how you see it, what you choose to focus on, and what you leave in the shadows. Look at how Manet used black to frame a composition, it’s a similar feeling.
