This small copperplate print was made by Meno Haas in the 18th century. The technique involves incising an image into a metal plate, inking the surface, and then wiping it clean so that ink remains only in the recesses. Paper is then pressed onto the plate, transferring the image. The crisp lines and fine details speak to the engraver’s skill, but the design is even more revealing. It’s an allegory of knowledge, with the Danish inscription "Where knowledge reigns, there is both counsel and courage." Surrounding the central inscription are symbols of wisdom and virtue – scales of justice, a burning candle, and tools associated with skilled trades. The print rewarded long hours of labor on Haas' part, like that of the artisans whose work is referenced in the composition. It served a purpose, communicating Enlightenment ideals to a broad audience. And although small in scale, it represents the massive shifts in social and intellectual life underway at the time. In this respect, it serves as a reminder that even the humblest objects can reflect larger historical forces.
