Honoré Daumier made this lithograph, titled 'Ambtenaar Robert Macaire wijst Bertrand af', using a greasy crayon on a stone plate. He then transferred the image to paper. Lithography enabled the relatively quick and cheap production of images, perfect for mass distribution. The material Daumier used is key to this print's effectiveness. The soft, almost smudgy quality of the lithographic crayon allows for subtle gradations of tone and texture. This helps to create a sense of volume and depth, and emphasize the social commentary: the corpulent figure of Robert Macaire, the archetypal swindler, contrasted with the gaunt, almost skeletal frame of Bertrand.
