This is Bernard Picart's allegorical representation, rendered with etching, of Asia, Africa, and America, with Mercury floating above. The central figures are potent symbols. Each continent is embodied as a woman, carrying distinct attributes. Note the indigenous American figure with her bow and arrow, a testament to the 'New World' and its perceived untamed nature. Then there is Mercury, a symbol of commerce and communication, hovering overhead. The figure of Mercury, as a messenger, can be traced back to ancient Greece and Rome, where Hermes, his Greek counterpart, bore the caduceus, a symbol of balance. Over time, it has resurfaced during the Renaissance and Enlightenment periods. The collective memory of classical antiquity, its myths and values, shaped the way we perceive the world. This image is part of a larger cultural narrative, a thread in the tapestry of human history. We see here the emotional power of visual symbols to transcend time and space, engaging viewers on a deep, subconscious level.
