Pieter Tanjé created this print of Venus and Adonis sometime in the first half of the 18th century. At this time, mythological scenes offered a socially acceptable framework for exploring themes of love, desire, and mortality. Tanjé invites us into a scene of intimacy and vulnerability between the goddess Venus and the mortal Adonis. Here, Venus is depicted gazing down at Adonis, who reclines languidly in her embrace. Tanjé captures the power dynamics inherent in their relationship. Venus, an immortal goddess, is reduced to the sorrow of human love and loss. Meanwhile, Adonis seems caught between worlds. This print invites contemplation on the nature of love, beauty, and the inevitable passage of time. Tanjé challenges us to consider the human condition through the lens of classical mythology.
