This ‘Ontwerp voor een zoutvat’ or design for a salt shaker, was made by Mathieu Lauweriks with ink and pencil on paper. The whole drawing is constructed with careful precision on a graph paper matrix, making the geometry and the process of design visible. There’s something about seeing those structural lines, these mathematical underpinnings, that gives the object a beautiful and solid presence. The spiral detail of the lid, for example, is echoed in the curved lines that divide up the rounded base into segments. Looking at this piece, I am reminded of Hilma af Klint. It is similar to the way she used geometry to order her compositions. The relationship between line, form, and color, and the way these elements are combined to create a sense of depth and movement, create a harmony. It is a testament to the endless possibilities of abstraction and design.
