This is Mathieu Lauweriks' "Ontwerp voor een zoutvat", a design for a salt shaker, and it's all about geometry. I can imagine Lauweriks with his compass and straightedge, on a mission to discover the hidden harmony in a humble salt shaker. Check out the grid, a kind of scaffolding. It’s an armature to build on and hang the design from. The circles and lines aren’t just decoration; they dictate the curves, the proportions. It’s like he’s saying, “Even something as everyday as salt can be elevated through pure form.” I'm sure that the other designers at the time were exploring similar ideas, each trying to find the perfect marriage of art and functionality. There's something deeply satisfying about seeing how artists and designers build upon each other's ideas, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. Anyway, this blueprint asks us: how can we elevate the mundane through the power of design?
