P. Schokker made this brown paint and starch paper sometime in the past, we don’t know exactly when, but it feels old. The paint on the surface has created a landscape of tonal colour variations, pooling and streaking in a way that’s reminiscent of geological strata. What I mean is, it's like you can see the earth's history in it. I imagine Schokker making this, maybe experimenting with a new formula. Did they want to see how the paint spread, or how the color changed when mixed with starch? There’s a simplicity to the act of painting and a beauty in the process of discovery. It makes me think about what painters do, how we're all experimenting, failing, and learning from each other, trying to find new ways of seeing or feeling. When you look closely, you realize how much work and thought goes into it. It's like a conversation between artists, across time.
