Maria Bozoky made "In Michelle's Bar" with watercolor and ink, and it's all about capturing a mood, a moment. The colors feel intuitive, like she's just letting the water and pigment lead the way, but with her hand still guiding. You get the sense that the making of the painting was really important, almost more important than the finished image. I love the way she uses these thin washes of color to build up the scene. There's this one spot, the front figure's blue top, where you can see the brushstrokes overlapping, creating this almost vibrating surface. It's not about perfection, it's about feeling. It reminds me a little of Toulouse-Lautrec's sketches of Parisian nightlife, that same sense of fleeting impressions captured with just a few strokes. Ultimately, Bozoky leaves room for interpretation. What are these people thinking? What's the story here? It's like she's inviting us to join the conversation, to bring our own experiences to the table.
