This -Sun Kraft Jr.- table sun lamp was made by Sun Kraft, Inc. sometime in the mid-20th century. The lamp presents the streamlining and functional design characteristic of the Machine Age. It emerged in a cultural context profoundly shaped by industrialization. Its clean lines and use of modern materials like aluminum were meant to suggest efficiency and progress. This aesthetic wasn't just about looking good; it reflected a broader belief in technology's potential to improve life. The lamp was conceived to make the benefits of artificial sunlight accessible to homes. This speaks to evolving social attitudes towards health and hygiene. Art historians consult period advertisements and design journals to further understand the cultural aspirations embedded in objects like this. By studying these historical sources, we gain insight into the values that shaped the design and reception of this lamp.
Comments
“A Promoter and Preserver of Good Health,” the Sun-Kraft table sun lamp was advertised for its ability to treat a variety of skin conditions, arthritis, sluggish blood circulation and respiratory ailments through the healing properties of ultra violet radiation (found naturally in sunlight). It also claimed men and women could benefit from sounder sleep, smoother skin and a general sense of wellbeing. Used on babies, it was said to promote healthy development. In 1945 Sun Kraft was sued for false advertising. Settled against the company, Sun Kraft was required to relabel it under the supervision of the Food and Agriculture Administration. Today, UV rays are known as the primary cause of skin cancer.
