Gordinne made this print called "The Inheritance of Karel / The Inheritance of Louis" sometime in the past, its exact date unknown. The pastel hues and graphic quality of the comic-strip-like presentation feel so familiar, in a way. I can imagine Gordinne composing the scenes, working out the story of the two inheritances. There's Karel, and Louis. It’s a study in contrasts. We get this sense of each man's world; one is industrious, the other squanders his wealth, and falls down the stairs, drunk. You can tell that Gordinne had fun rendering the figures and setting out each man's lot in life. The comparison between the two really puts each man's life into perspective. They are so caught up in their own worlds and the inheritance that they are given. The stories we tell can be seen as a kind of inheritance, too, something that artists keep alive in their work. They inform our perspective, and are a form of creativity in themselves.
