This untitled painting was created by Manuel Felguérez, a key figure in the abstract expressionist movement in Mexico. Felguérez, working during a time of intense political and social change, found that traditional artistic forms could not contain the full spectrum of human experience. Here we see a dynamic interplay of geometric forms, bold colors, and fragmented shapes which challenge traditional notions of representation. Felguérez layers shapes and colors to create a sense of depth. The dark colors surrounding a burst of red evoke strong feelings, suggesting both the depth of human emotion and the complexity of the human experience. Felguérez said that he was trying to "create a new reality" in his art. In his search for new ways of expression, Felguérez moves beyond established artistic narratives, and invites viewers to engage with the artwork on a deeply personal level.
