Guntis Strupulis' 'Saulains rīts' is an evocation created with mixed media on cardboard. Here, the chair is stark against softer shapes, its form a potent symbol. The chair, seemingly so simple, is a vessel laden with meaning; in ancient Egypt, thrones signified power, while empty chairs in memorial art speak of absence. This echoes in van Gogh's chairs, portraits of absent figures, heavy with unspoken narratives. The solidity of the chair contrasts with the translucent blocks of colour and the stone, grounding the composition. Like a 'memento mori', the solid chair reminds us of stability and longevity, while the overall effect of the piece evokes a sense of the transient, inviting reflection on the cyclical dance of existence.
