Umberto Boccioni made this drawing, Head of the Artist's Mother, with pencil and maybe some charcoal on paper. It's a good example of how a few lines can capture so much feeling. The marks are quick and sure, but also tender. The way he shades around her eyes, it’s not just about showing how light falls, but more like he’s feeling out the shape of her face, understanding her. Look at the shadow under her cheek, how it curves down and then back. It’s such a simple thing, but it gives her weight and presence. And then there's the way the lines don't quite meet, leaving little gaps. It’s like he’s letting her breathe, not trapping her on the page. It reminds me of Käthe Kollwitz, who also drew her family with so much love and understanding. It’s all about seeing, feeling, and letting that guide your hand.
